IBS Debate Semifinals

The NCD School Debate Competition will enter its grand final round this Friday with Marianville and Port Moresby International School as the 2014 grand finalists.

Today’s semi finals were more of an educational session than a challenge. Debaters showed confidence in their presentations and most importantly, displayed evidence of good research. They also presented arguments with reference to EMTV’s weekly program Business PNG.

The Schools that participated in the Semi Finals were Don Bosco Technical, Marianville, Port Moresby International and Kopkop College.

It was an exciting challenge and students pointed out realistic aspects on the debate topics. In round one, DBTS and Marianville debated on the Topic “Counterfeit goods should be banned in PNG”.

Going for the topic, few points the Bosconians raised were, counterfeit goods encourage Piracy and lack durability. Going against the topic, the Emvillians, argued that Counterfeit products should not be banned.

Their arguments include, the goods perform similar roles, genuine goods perform, creates employment and is affordable by to many.

Kopkop College and POMIS debated on the topic “Science is a threat to Humanity.

Though it was just a competition between schools, valid points were stated, and good recommendations were presented.

The debate is an excellent avenue for students to present logical arguments to the current issues we face.
