Hockey World League Series: PNG women’s team thrash Samoa

By Lorraine Genia – EM TV, Port Moresby

The PNG women’s hockey team were off to a positive start at the Hockey World League Series in Fiji after thrashing Samoa 5 points to 1.

With the expertise and experience of Terry Kiapin as captain, the girls were able to identify Samoa’s weaknesses, what they had failed to do in previous years, and reel in a long anticipated win, once and for all.

The women’s team led by 4 goals in the first half and by then had built up enough momentum to uphold their defence and ball security until fulltime.

While the men’s team started off with a positive win, their preparedness towards a high level of competition showed in day 2 of the league, after suffering a massive thrashing from the Australian Country team, 12 goals to nil.

While these are mixed results coming out from just day 2 of competition, the PNG Hockey Federation now need to focus on building a winning combination for the 2015 Pacific Games, as the Hockey World League Series will be a serious test to the teams current form.

PNG (Women) vs SAMOA results: PNG 5 (Terry Kiapin, Nikita Terrence, Venesa Perry (2), Alice Fredi), Samoa 1 (Sharline Fagalilo).
