This maiden showdown will see the pioneering greats come into action, bringing back the 80’s style of footy. Another flaring weekend for Lae residents, they will be treated to a feast of footy action.

A maiden showdown is expected from the PNG Rugby League greats in the likes of Richard Wagambie, Stanley Hondina, Raymond Karl, Bal Numapo including Simbu governor, Noah Kool, a pioneer player, the platform for the birth of the nation’s national sport.

The Golden Oldies Rugby league match is booked for this weekend featuring All Stars and Lae in a curtain raiser for round 10 of Digicel Cup double header.

Yesterday, the boys were hard at training, toning up while hoping to recapture their once lost pride on the field come this weekend.

Lae Snax Tigers coach, Stanley Tepend, whose part of the organizing committee is overwhelmed to get the show rolling. He says, with the blessing from the PNGRFL, the match will become an annual event.

Meanwhile, Mendi has been put on halt to host the Digicel Cup matches due to a match official being assaulted by a team official supporter of Muruks- Wigmen game played last weekend.

PNGNRL General Manager, Hubert Warupi says the assault on a match official is of grave concern which has brought the credibility of the PNGNRL and game into disrepute.

As a result of the incident, the Wigmen versus Eagles match this weekend will be played in Mt. Hagen. The perpetrators will be banned from attending any PNGNRL sanctioned events and the NRL Board will take appropriate action on the team, which may include a financial fine or deduction of competition points.

In the Eastern pool, Mioks take on Lahanis and Tigers welcome Isapeas. North Western pool, Lions and Vipers meet in Kundiawa while Gurias and Murukas are on bye.

This round will determine the top 3 teams from each pool to head into cross over round. The bottom 2 teams will continue the round. The cross over round will decide the eight teams for the finals.
