Friday 8th January Declared Public Holiday

Friday 8th January 2021 has been declared a Public Holiday for Papua New Guinea in respect to the funeral service for former Prime Minister, Sir Mekere Morauta.

Minister responsible for the funeral and burial for Sir Mekere, Justin Tkatchenko made the announcement today saying it will set a template for PNG going forward.

Sir Mekere’s funeral will be held at the Reverend Sioni Kami Memorial Church this Friday from 10am-12pm.

Former Prime Minister Sir Rabi Namaliu, a close friend of Sir Mekere is expected to read out the eulogy at the funeral service.

While Prime Minister James Marape will pay a tribute to Sir Mekere’s family on behalf of the country.

Sir Mekere’s casket will later be escorted to Independence Hill where he will be laid to rest next to former Prime Minister, Sir Bill Skate.
