Madang police have shot four armed criminals who were part of a group of (7) men who tried to escape after robbing an employee of a business house of its money yesterday.

Provincial Police Commander, Superintendent Jacob Singura, confirmed one of the suspects was shot dead, while the other 3 criminals were seriously injured.

The three suspects were taken to the Modilon General Hospital for treatment. The other three suspects are at large.

Singura said a police officer that was there at the time realised what was happening and tried to investigate when the criminals shot at him.

The officer was in his vehicle and was fortunate that he was not shot.

However the vehicle has bullet dents and the car’s radiator was damaged from the shots fired at him by the criminals.

The officer pursued them to the back of Anderson’s Foodland where they were trying to escape on a getaway boat.

However, the officer managed to shoot two suspects.

PPC, Singura acknowledged the members of the public who assisted the officer who was alone at the time to alert the other police personnel for back up.

From there the reinforcement team arrived and pursued the criminals and apprehended 3 of them while the fourth suspect was shot dead.

PPC Singura commended his personnel, saying despite facing a number of problems including manpower shortage and vehicles, they still performed their duties.

Singura said this incident should be a warning to other criminals to refrain from committing armed robberies.
