Five Questioned by Police Over Sorcery-Related Violence

Police are questioning five men in relation to the torture and assault of a woman in Port Moresby.

Police say the men were allegedly involved in the assault because they believed the woman was practising sorcery.

They were apprehended this morning at Nine Mile and are in custody at the Gordons Police Station.

The five men were picked up early this morning by Gordons Police.

They are being questioned for the torture and assault of an elderly woman, Margaret Sipa from Simbu.

It is believed the men suspected Sipa of sorcery and badly assaulted her last Thursday.

After questioning, if police find enough evidence against the men, they can be arrested and charged for Assault, under the Criminal Code Act.

But if there is not enough evidence, the men will be released.

Yesterday, police also questioned seven other men involved in the same matter.

However, no arrests have yet been made.

The victim has received medical assistance but is still recovering.
