The PNG Rugby Football League announced a 15 member squad for the Commonwealth Rugby League under 19 Nines Championships in Glasgow later this month.
The players were selected from the trials held last week in Lae.
PNGRFL Chairman, Sandis Tsaka was happy with the high level of skills displayed, which looks promising for the future of rugby league in the country.
There were 64 players selected from the PNGRFL sanctioned development programs, which descended on Lae, Morobe province last week. The trials were delivered through the PNGRFL Team Kumul Program
PNGRFL Chairman, Sandis Tsaka announced a 15 member squad and exhalted the brilliance displayed by the young guns.
The players include SP PNG Hunters young gun, Stanton Albert, and Lae Snax Tigers duo, Warren Glare, and Nickson Borana who played for Lae side at the trials.
Tsaka says the players were selected because they displayed high level skills, which are suited to the shortened version of Nines Rugby League, and were selected irrespective of the regions they came from.
He says, we need to get away from the practice of picking players based on regions, trying to balance for the regions, to represent PNG in international competitions.
Tsaka says players were selected based on merit.
Dennis Miall from Lae who has been involved in the school boys program for the last three years will coach the team. Supporting him were Toksy Nema, Philip Boge, and Shane Morris as the Tour Manager. PNGRFL Board Director, Joe Tokam is the Team Official.
The Team will go into camp this Sunday and scheduled to depart on June, the 21st for Glasgow, Scotland, before the two day tournament kicks off on June, the 27th.
