Disgruntled Lae Cannery Workers Return to Work

Staff of the Frabelle Cannery in Lae have been given the assurance that their complaints regarding pay increases will be addressed.

Workers agreed to return to work today whilst the management and the relevant authorities address the issue.

According to spokesperson Mathew Som, the management has agreed to address issues raised with staff pay.

“We have agreed to return to work and the management has also agreed to address the issue with staff wages,” Som told EMTV News today.

Last week Monday, frustrated staff walked off their jobs for an increase on their current pay.

They also requested that the management change its decision to make Sunday an official work day.

The management struck out Sunday as an official work day, however issues with staff pay is yet to be sorted.

“The management got our petition and are willing to address the things we have stated,” said Som.

The workers have been told they will be getting a response from the National Fisheries Authority and the management in 2 weeks, regarding their wages.

“We will have another meeting and if the response is not as expected, we will go back to protesting”
