Daru Embraces PiU Program

by Lorraine Genia – EM TV, Port Moresby

After the recent inception of the Pacific in Union program in Daru, with the influx of more girls participating, the Daru Rugby Football Union is now considering a women’s rugby competition.

DRFU president Kerry Gera said that the PiU program was exactly what the province needed as they were lacking a junior development program in previous years to sustain and support the development of the code.
School’s coordinator of the PiU program, Robin Chauka confirmed that the development program has worked well in favour of the schools, as it has maximised the attendance of children, while given them the opportunity to excel in both co-curriculum activities and academically.
While the schools embrace the PiU program as part of their curriculum, Mr Gera says they are currently lacking manpower that are both qualified and certified to run programs as such.
Rugby was introduced to the people of the Western Province in 1997 by Joey Charlie. Since then, the code has been the dominated sports played and followed right throughout the province.
