Court orders Counting of 84 SHP Disputed Boxes

The National Court in Waigani has dismissed a contempt case against the Electoral Commissioner to disqualify the counting of 84 disputed boxes in the Southern Highlands Regional Seat.

The Court stated that there should be no interference with the decision made earlier by Electoral Commissioner Patilias Gamato.

The 84 disputed boxes are currently locked at the Mendi Police Station.

Justice Collin Makail handed down the decision striking out the order sought by Mr Kobol.

Justice Makail’s decision means the court now declines to grant the orders and upholds Electoral Commissioner’s decision to have the remaining 84 boxes to be counted as instructed earlier.

Makail said the aggrieved parties should seek the court’s assistance after the election process is completed through the court of dispute of returns.

The decision yesterday now directs the Provincial Returning Officer to include the 84 boxes for counting and must be transported to Mt Hagen for the counting process to be completed before a winner is declared.
