Empowering the police force at the community level is vital in combating law and order.
Sogeri Police Station, outside Port Moresby, can now carry out its’ community policing operations with ease, following the donation of a Land Cruiser vehicle by Pacific Balanced Fund.
It is part of their community development scheme.
Sogeri Police Station has a long history. It was here that the first policemen were trained.
Over the years, however, the station has been neglected. The lack of manpower and resources has rendered it unfit to carry out its operations.
This has been a worry to the force.
The vehicle donated by Pacific Balanced Fund, will at least put some of their worries to rest.
It is worth K140, 000. Senior Trade Executive of Melanesian Trustee Limited, Issac McNerbai, said the scheme was developed to give back to the community.
Kabip Lamu, Deputy Superintendent for NCD Central, gave his assurance to use the vehicle for its intended purpose. He said that strict conditions will be applied for the use of this vehicle.
The vehicle will also be used as a tourism police vehicle to provide security for tourists along the Kokoda Track, and for the 5th Melanesian Arts Festival.
This is a boost for community policing in the area, and the community were grateful for this generosity.
