Central Women’s Day

More than eight hundred women from Central Province marked the National Women’s Day in Tubuseria village yesterday.

Even though this day falls on the 24th of March every year, Central Province Council of Women celebrated late due to the late release of event funding. The theme for this year, is 'Working Together to Inspire Change'.

Many travelled from all the 5 districts to observe the day.

Women came from all the districts of Central Province, including Goilala, Abau, Rigo, Hiri and Kairuku, all organised by the Central Province Council of Women, the body affiliated to the mother organisation, the National Council of Women.

The community oval at Tubuseria village was packed to capacity with song and dance. The women were dressed in different colours representing each district.

There were also displays of food items and arts and craft; this was mainly to appreciate what women can produce.

Joining in the celebration were Rigo MP and Transport Minister, Ano Pala, Kairuku Hiri MP, Peter Isoaimo and Goilala MP, Daniel Mona.

Before opening the celebration, the member for Kairuku Hiri challenged women to step up and be part of the changing world that is male dominated.

The Transport Minister appreciated all that women do in contributing to development. Each district performed for the guests.

There was also a beauty queen pageant featuring representatives from each district. Rigo district was named the best performing district, while Miss Hiri was crowned Miss Central Province Queen.

The overall winner for the 2014 Central Province Women’s day best district went to Rigo district.

The day ended with the handover of the flag to Rigo district, who will be the host of next year’s celebration.
