Call to Review and Amend Resource Laws

By Jack Lapauve Jr – EMTV News, Port Moresby

North Fly MP James Donald wants resource laws to be reviewed and changes made.

MP Donald questioned Petroleum Minister Kerenga Kua during parliament if the Marape-Steven Government was serious with the slogan “Take PNG” and ensuring resource owners and all levels of government receive a fair share of funding in the petroleum sector.

He says the 2% sharing of equity to landowners and the host provincial government is not fair. “We must change these laws to help support our people and State agencies provide better services to our people,” said MP Donald. The North Fly MP believes laws must be reviewed to chart a way forward so appropriate benefits are shared equally.

Responding swiftly, the Petroleum Minister says the Marape-Steven Government is considering a change across all resource laws and that work has begun to amend legislations.

While assuring the floor of changes for laws in the Petroleum Sector, Minister Kua said a wider consultation will be done in the Industry and amendments will be presented on the floor of Parliament for debate.
