Call For Parliamentarians To Debate UBS Loan

The controversial UBS loan that has caused public debate must become the subject of this parliament sitting.

University of Papua New Guinea SRC President, Bobby Yupi, said parliamentarians must debate the UBS loan and do away with it.

Mr Yupi, along with other UPNG students, tried to put up a peaceful protest at the parliament house this afternoon to remind parliamentarians to discuss the controversial loan. However, they were turned back by police.

“We do not intend to interfere with the parliament sitting but we just want to urge them (the parliamentarians) to make UBS loan the main topic,” Mr. Yupi said.

The Police instruction to turn them back did not sit well with some students, but others said the move was not properly planned.

Meanwhile, the students request the Government to constructively debate the issue, including speculations surrounding the laws and procedures involved in the purchase of two power generators from two separate Israeli companies.
