APEC Officials hold Counter Terrorism Discussions

By: Theckla Gunga, EMTV News-Port Moresby

Talks on Countering Terrorism are underway in Port Moresby as APEC member countries discuss the safe movement of the 21 World Leaders and their delegations in November.

These decisions are focused on four main areas, including secured travel and infrastructure.

Discussions commenced today with Papua New Guinea taking the lead as the host nation.

Counter Terrorism will be an important agenda that will be carried forward to the First Senior Officials on March 7th to 9th.

This is because it deals with safety and security for World Leaders, their spouse and their delegation.

Representing Papua New Guinea in this high-level discussion, Tony Kaib from the Office of Security Coordination and Assessment explained that PNG is addressing domestic terrorism through the Security Policy.

Though the approaches to countering terrorism may differ from one APEC member country to the other, these discussions are centred on; secure travel, secure finance, secure infrastructure and secure trade.

It is an important avenue for PNG to source ideas from, as it places PNG at a higher level of discussions on terrorism.

This is just the planning phase, but the Recommendations from these discussions will be presented in the SOM1 meeting in March.
