National ID Vital For Development

It is vital that every person in PNG must be registered, making planning easier, and more appropriate.

In an effort to roll out the National Identification Card project, the National Civil Registration Office is planning to transfer its registration into provinces, and ward areas. This will help to register all births, deaths, transfers of people, and proper development planning.

The National Identification Card project is expected to be rolled out this year, by Chinese international telecommunications company, Huawei.

This project was captured as one of the priority areas under the Department for Community Development Corporate Plan 2013- 2016.

National Planning and Monitoring Minister, Charles Abel, said the Government needs reliable data, so planning will be efficient. “The National ID system will get everyone registered” Minister Abel said.

Last year, the Department for Community Development, and Religion, successfully completed the review of the Civil Registration Act 2013, and the new National Civil Registration Policy.

The amended Civil Registration Act, is now called the Civil Registration Personal Identification Act 2013, and the new Policy is called, the National Persons and Civil Registration Policy.
