One man sustained knive wounds in a retaliation attack at Lae’s Eriku bus stop yesterday, after he harassed and pickpocketed from a woman.
This incident follows an increased number of petty crimes happening around the bus stop area, raising concerns about public safety.
Doreen Akusa, who lives in the Nawaeb block area, says she does her shopping at the supermarkets next to the bus stop.
But going to these shops means passing through a bus stop area that has, in recent months, become hostile. Doreen says Eriku’s atmosphere has become menacing for women and girls.
“I didn’t feel safe in Eriku,” she says.
The hot spots include the highlands bus stop and the overhead bridge.
Less than 24 hours after yesterday’s violence, another pickpocket was caught on camera today running off with someone’s wallet.
Much of the blame for the nuisance around Eriku has been levelled against those loitering around the buai market.
In 2011, pickpocketing and assaults in Eriku triggered protests in Lae City.
