Training Camp In Kerema

Students and teachers of Kerema High School, upon request from the PNG Sports Foundation, have been successful in securing funds and facilitators to run an athletics training camp in the province.

The initiative comes under the PNG Sports Foundation as an act of offering services and providing pathways for disadvantaged provinces in Papua New Guinea.

The Sports Foundation has gone one step further in strengthening the ties between rural outlets and the governing sporting body of Papua New Guinea.

Gulf Province, formerly known for their strong athletics contingent, lost their glimpses of glory between the 1980’s and 1990’s and have not seen that kind of talent ever since.

Sports co-ordinator of Kerema High School, Kamava Karara, believes the best way to revive athletics and sports in the province is by starting from the bottom and working their way up, with giving the children a head start through programs initiated by the Sports Foundation.

Peter Aglua, facilitator of the training camp in the Malalaua District, also Coordinator of Special Projects at the PNG Sports Foundation office, emphasizes the importance of distributing their services to disadvantaged provinces.

Members of Kerema High School, with the support of PNG Sports Foundation, are emphatic with the message of promoting untapped talent in the outer districts, rather than focusing on what the Nation’s Capital has to offer.

Members of the PNG Sports Foundation will be travelling to Malalaua District of the Gulf Province for a 5-day training camp which will commence on Monday, the 7th of July.
