Koriama’s Concerns on Government Loans

A women's representative from Hela province has raised concerns about the Government's move to negotiate further loans.

President of Hela Provincial Council of Women, Janet Koriama, said instead the Government must use the LNG revenue to rebuild infrastructure and deliver basic services.

In an interview with EMTV, Mrs Koriama strongly opposed the Government’s intention on the K3 billion loan, to buy a stake in Oil Search.

Mrs Koriama described this amount as “too much” saying as LNG project owners; they simply don’t want the revenue generated from the project to be used to repay the loan.

She claimed that back in Tari, infrastructure is declining and Government services are lacking.

She also claimed that many of the vendors in Port Moresby are from Tari and Southern Highlands, who resort to such living because back in their province, government services are lacking.

She said if the Government wants to get such a big amount of loan, they should properly inform the people before doing so.
