Coral Triangle Day

Papua New Guinea boasts one of the diverse marine biodiversity in the world but human activities continue to spoil it, and calls have been made to people to preserve it.

Unwanted human behaviours like dynamite fishing, throwing of human and industrial wastes into the sea and on the pathways have to be stop.

These calls have been made by Environment and Conservation Minister, John Pundari, during the Coral Triangle Day celebrations held today at Port Moresby’s Ela Beach.

This is the second time PNG joins other six countries in the Coral Triangle to celebrate the Coral Triangle Day. This year’s theme is ‘Protect the Coral Triangle; Protect the fish for the World.’

The six countries in the Coral Triangle include Philippines, Malaysia, Timor Leste, Indonesia, PNG and Solomon Islands.

The Environment and Conservation Department has taken the lead in organising this event.

School students in selected schools around NCD took part in the event, showing their support by collecting rubbish along Ela Beach.

The Coral Triangle initiative is created by six member countries purposely to share skills, ideas and knowledge on how best they can work together to address issues of marine protection, food security, and climate change among others.

Minister Pundari challenged the people to have self-respect for themselves and likewise, will respect others and the environment.

Also, respective Head of Missions from other member nations threw in their support for marine protection within the triangle. Meanwhile, the six countries are trying to form a Secretariat.
