US & PNG Navy To Provide Security For APEC Summit

The US Army will join the PNG, Australia, and New Zealand Defense Forces to provide security during the 2018 Asia Pacific Economic Corporation Leaders’ Summit in 2018.

Prime Minister Peter O’Neill made this affirmation when he met with the United States-Pacific Naval Commander, Admiral Samuel Locklear III yesterday.

 

The two leaders discussed various matters involving the US Army presence in Papua New Guinea.

Mr. O’Neill said the two leaders discussed various matters involving the US Army presence in Papua New Guinea.

 

Discussions included the government’s interest to increase the US army presence in the country, seek in-depth army training for our PNGDF soldiers.

 

More focus was on increasing the assistance of the US naval fleet.

 

Out of all the U.S. military commands, the U.S. Pacific Command, based in Hawaii, is the largest command and it overseas operations in what constitutes half of the globe.

 

The admiral said the United States remains focused on working together with all our allies and partners throughout the Asia Pacific region, to boost ensure that they maintain security and stability.

 

The U.S. also has major investments in the oil and gas industry in the region, and PNG amongst others investments in other industries.

 

The Prime Minister said there will also be a training arrangement, where PNG soldiers will be trained by the US army, as part of their capacity building.

 

He said during their talks, Admiral Locklear, upon his invitation, further agreed to provide additional naval security support during the 2018 APEC Leaders’ Summit, which will be hosted here in Port Moresby in 2018.

 

The Prime Minister also met with the executives of Total – an exploration company which has formed a strategic partnership with Oil Search Ltd to assess other exploration opportunities in PNG and Talisman Energy – a global upstream oil and gas company, headquartered in Canada. 

 

Talisman has two main operating areas: the Americas (North America &, Colombia) and the Asia-Pacific.

 

These investors will be developing the country’s major oil and gas projects in the Central, Western, Gulf and Southern Highlands Provinces.
