Praise On Divine Word University

Visitors to Divine Word University’s 32nd graduation have heaped praise upon the institution for its innovative approaches to student ICT services and energy efficiency.

Over the last 10 years, the Catholic University has moved from strength to strength providing each student with a laptop as well as reliable internet services.

More recently, DWU has moved on to trialing clean energy options that reduce its dependence on PNG Power.

Divine Word University Graduations are always colorful events. While green dominated yet again for another year, there were notable achievements announced yesterday.

First and foremost, the PhD awarded to Bougainvillean, Joseph Kim Suamar who produced a doctoral theses on the social economic impact of mobile phones in Papua New Guinea.

He is the first to receive a PhD from Divine Word’s Business and Informatics Department.  But as congratulatory applause died down, he told a packed audience that he could not have done it without DWU’s reliable internet services and power supply.

While the government struggles with various hurdles to   bring down internet costs and improve energy efficiency in the country, Divine Word University has featured again prominently as a leader in student ICT services and power provision using green energy.

The driving force behind DWU’s success is a strong team lead by Fr. Jan Czuba.  Every student entering into the first year of uni is given a laptop, internet access as well as other essentials that go with it.

It is in vast contrast to state run universities.

Resources are being pumped into state run universities to rehabilitate infrastructure.  But given the years of neglect, it will take several years before state universities catch up.

The Higher education Minister will be taking a new submission to cabinet for 3 new universities. She expects strong support from other cabinet members. Ideally, she’d like to see the Divine Word example replicated in all universities.
