Business and Proffesional Women's Club Annual Breakfast Fundraiser

International Womenโ€™s Day was recently celebrated around the world with the theme โ€œInspiring Changeโ€ and Papua New Guinea recognized the day in its own way.

ย

Last week, there was a womenโ€™s forum that had constructive discussions on the 22 reserved seats for women in Parliament.

And this morning, the Business and Professional Womenโ€™s Club of Port Moresby, held their annual breakfast fundraiser.

ย

The Crowne Plaza had splashes of purple to commemorate International Womenโ€™s Day and of course, the presence of beautiful, working class women from various fields, who attended the breakfast fundraiser.

ย

And EMTV caught up with newly-appointed Minister for Higher Education, Science and Technology, Delilah Gore, who was present to show her support for women empowerment in PNG.

ย

The minister also appreciated the Oโ€™Neill-Dion Government for having faith in women holding ministerial portfolios

ย

And thatโ€™s exactly what they did! President of Business and Professional Womenโ€™s Club, Susil Nelson, was happy to announce that although todayโ€™s fundraiser had a slight increase from last year, the continuous support was definitely there.

ย

The fundraiser also had the support of the Australian High Commissioner, Deborah Stokes, who said Australian Government has a steadfast and ongoing commitment to be at the forefront of efforts to promote gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls, particularly in the Indo-Pacific including in Papua New Guinea.

ย

Statistics show that two-thirds of the 774 million illiterate adults worldwide are women โ€“ the same proportion for the past 20 years and across most regions.

ย

Ms Stokes also stated that the Australian Government invests in targeted programs to promote gender equality and womenโ€™s empowerment under three pillars, where there are challenges and progress towards gender equality been slow:

  1. Womenโ€™s voice in decision-making, leadership and peace building
  2. Womenโ€™s economic empowerment and
  3. Ending violence against women and girls
