Oscar De La Renta, dubbed as doyen for American Fashion rose to stardom through clothing stars in 1950s. He died yesterday at his home in Kent at the age of 82.
Oscar’s wife confirmed his death at their home in Kent, Conn. The cause of death was complications from cancer. De La Renta has been living with cancer for the last eight year and boy were they incredible – his business grew by 50 per cent up to $150 million.
The iconic fashion designer’s last piece of fashion wear was by far one of his most significant works – the ivory tulle gown that Amal Allamuddin wore to wed George Clooney.
De la Renta was determined to stay relevant, and has survived the industry twice, first in 1980. His couture lines found international recognition in two distinct arenas; by dressing rich socialites like the First Lady’s and of course the Hollywood glitz and glamour that he became a huge part of.
The fashion designer found prominence in dressing First Ladies as Laura Bush, Hilary Clinton, Nancy Reagan and his latest addition Michelle Obama. Among the Hollywood stars he has had the distinct honour of dressing are Sarah Jessica Parker, Amy Adams, Penelope Cruz, and Beyonce.
De la Renta has been a visionary who has created a synonymous and timeless label which shall live on.
In addition to his wife Annette, he has been survived by his son, Moises, by his three sisters and by three step children and nine grand children.
