Ebola has already infected an estimated 10,000 people, particularly in West Africa, where 50 per cent of the infected have died.
It’s a disease with no cure or vaccine and is contracted through the exchange of bodily fluids such as blood, saliva, sweat and vomit.
Recently, Australia experienced an Ebola scare which tested negative; however, in the United States, Spain and parts of Europe, the effects are very real, with substantial monitoring mechanisms in place.
Last week, a stakeholders meeting was held in Port Moresby with border authorities, air and seaport agencies, NAQIA, the Health Department and the World Health Organisation (WHO), to discuss PNG’s protective measures.
Currently, the country does not have the capacity and infrastructure for surveillance and monitoring at its entry points to protect itself from Ebola.
The Health Department and WHO declared that the prospect of Ebola in PNG is very low.
