Rural Electrification Project Set To Power Up Kokopo District

by Stanley Ove Jr – EMTV, Port Moresby

Kokopo in East New Britain Province, is undergoing positive developments and is the fastest growing town of the NGI region. Since the relocation of the province’s main town centre from Rabaul to Kokopo after the 1994 twin volcanic eruptions, the town has grown from strength to strength.

On Monday, Prime Minister Peter O’Neill opened Kokopo’s new LLG Office Complex and commissioned 5 development projects in the district.

Under the DSIP, rural electrification is the major development project the district is undertaking. The District’s Project Officer, Oscar Karrek said the project’s implementation has been many easy by the people having permanent houses in Vunamami and other LLGs. Karrek said the project has taken them 1 year to construct because of the main power lines established along the principal highway of the district.

Meanwhile Kokopo MP Ereman ToBaining Jr said the district administration made very important decisions over the past 2 years to develop the district. The MP said under the DSIP the district has spent over K8 million to fund major projects in the district. And the rural electrification project is the largest with K5 million spent to cover 25km of land to have electricity.

The project will enable electricity supply to the entire district, including the Duke of York Island.
