Southern Highlands Province Revamp Underway

Southern Highlands Province has implemented some of the impact projects that were prioritized under their transformation phase.

Governor William Powi said much of the projects were in line with the recently launched Five Year Strategic Master Development Plan 2012- 2017.

Most of the development grant of K25 million was spent on transport and infrastructure.

The Southern Highlands Provincial Administration is tasked with the responsibility to translate the visions and strategies under the development plan into annual action planning and activities reflected in the Provincial Government Annual budgets.

Southern Highlands Governor William Powi said the development grants have been directly diverted to five key priorities aligned with the five-year development plan.

This includes administration, law and justice, infrastructure, education, health, churches, youth, women groups and SME’s. Governor Powi said he received the full funding of K25 million earmarked for the 2013 Fiscal Year, where 70% of the funds were used on the infrastructure sector.

Governor Powi highlighted this when he presented his Provincial Services Improvement Program or PSIP acquittal reports to the Department of Implementation and Rural Development.

Some of the major impact projects that were implemented include the Nipa Growth Centre at the cost of K2 million, while K1 million was spent on Kutubu Mt Bosavi road. About K2.5 million was allocated for various road works and maintenance.

The Southern Highlands Administration further allocated K17. 5 million towards transport and infrastructure which made the biggest slice of the budget.

Six million kina was equally divided on health, economic and education services. The remaining K1.5 million was allocated to community services.

The SHP Administration will continue to deliver through the SHP Master Plan that has been captured in 2014 SHP Budget, reflecting Governor Powi’s visions of rehabilitation and restoration of government services.
