PNG Canoe Association Hosts Racing Regatta

It was a great day with the sun, wind and surf, providing the perfect backdrop as the PNG Canoeing Association hosted its racing regatta at Ela Beach.

Konedobu Kanoe Klab, Kemper and the POM Outrigger Canoe Club battled it out with other clubs in the 1500, 1000 and 250m sprint events.

With choppy waves making it difficult around the turns, racers where looking at the straight lines to really Kempa, Pom Outrigger Canoe club, 3K,My Haus and visiting teams from as far away as Kaparoko and Kalo villages in Kaupa, accelerate ahead of other competitors.

Three different events were contested, beginning earlier in the day with the 1500m long distance. With the buoys placed 250m apart, the 1000m race featured four turns with POMOCC and 3K neck and neck to the finish, POMOCC taking it in a real photo finish.

The women’s events were just as competitive, with 3K, featuring a host of PNG representatives showing their class and proving too strong for their fellow racers.

With the sport more or less a traditional activity for the people of PNG, the organizers are hoping to have the sport spread to other parts of the nation before the PNG Games later on in the year.
