O’Neill Clarifies Case: Conflicting Reports

Prime Minister, Peter O’Neill clarified on the floor of parliament, on issues relating to the court case between PNG Sustainable Development Program Limited and the PNG Government.

He said contrary to recent media reports, the Singapore high court has not made a ruling yet. He made the remarks after Western Province Governor, Ati Wobiro, asked for clarification.

Western Province Governor, Ati Wobiro, was concerned about conflicting media reports on the PNGSDP vs. PNG Government court case in Singapore.

Prime Minister, Peter O’Neill said the court case was still ongoing and that the statements released by Chairman of the board of PNGSDP, Sir Mekere Morauta, were unwarranted.

He claimed Sir Mekere was a shareholder of shares in PNGSDP and a board member for life. The remarks gave way to gasps from MPs. Mr. O’Neill questioned who Sir Mekere was accountable to. He said the board was selling assets at extremely low values.

The trust funds are said to have US$ 1.4 billion. He said the state was not interested in the money, but rather for the people of Western province, to take ownership of funds from PNGSDP. The government plans to restructure the program.
