Marchers commemorate World AIDS Day

by Jacob Niru – EM TV, Port Moresby

PNG joined the world today to say no to discrimination against people living with HIV and AIDS, aiming to give them hope and care instead, where needed.

This was demonstrated in Port Moresby during World AIDS Day where awareness was raised on the dangers of HIV and AIDS, the preventive measures available and the support needed for people living with the virus.

People from all walks of life took the message to the streets, marching from Unagi Oval all the way to Jack Pidik Park coinciding with PNG’s theme for this year: “Zero discrimination” and “Access to services is my right”.

Director of the National AIDS Council Secretariat, Mr Peter Bire said the aim is to encourage all our citizens to be aware of the prevalence of HIV and AIDS.

“… And also to avoid transmission of the virus through safe sex practices, to end all sorts of discrimination and help those living with HIV and AIDS,” he added.

He urged everyone to take care of their lives and give hope to those living with the virus without discrimination.

Moreover, Charley Farai, Commanding Officer of Correctional Services says correctional services is a governmental law-enforcing agency that has not only been advocating and addressing the issue, but also taking care of people living with HIV and AIDS while serving term in prison.
