Kombiu LLG: Rabaul’s rural electricity program begins

by Bethanie Harriman – EM TV, Rabaul

Twenty years after Rabaul’s volcanic eruptions which destroyed most infrastructures including power lines, the district is slowly rebuilding them.

Providing rural electricity is the district’s move to improve the quality of people’s lives, both socially and economically after the eruptions devastation. Rabaul MP, Dr Allan Marat has embarked on a quest to resupply electricity to areas that did have power twenty years ago, as well as those that didn’t.

The endeavour began today, with the commissioning of the Kombiu Rural Electrification Program, attended by outgoing Opposition Leader, Belden Namah.

Vanimo-Green MP, Belden Namah says more of these life-changing events should be undertaken by the national government.

“These are the kind of essential services the national government should promote,” he said.

Marat says the move is to bring back the life the people had before the twin volcano eruptions.

“They have been in darkness for the past twenty years,” said Marat. The local community sees this as a comeback from losing electricity in the 1994 volcanic eruptions.
