The inclusion of people with special needs in decision making and development activities is now a target.
Papua New Guinea’s developing agencies, through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) will support the ‘People with Special Needs Foundation‘ with training to better understand the policy. Training in Japan next year will enable organisations to effectively implement policies in the country.
Since its inception in 1974, JICA has assisted humanitarian aid projects throughout the world. This project will strengthen ties with development agencies and the Japanese government.
JICA Chief Representative, Shigeru Sugiyama said this agency initiated this agenda to enable people living with special needs to access services and cope with international standards. He said after training, advocates will be motivated to provide action plans in the areas of education, health, environment and Sport.
“This has been an issue since our beginnings… It has always been a priority area we have never forgotten about because everybody has a right to live in equal circumstances,” he said.
An advocator for people living with special needs, Jean Parkop said she has been vocal in advocating for the betterment of these people for almost 30 years.
