The PNG Games, as expected was a celebration of Papua New Guinea’s sporting revolution, as more than 9,000 athletes and officials converged in Lae City.
The Games however had thousands more watching the performances, creating a festival of flavour and colour to the games. The opening ceremony of the 6th PNG Games was nothing short ofspectacular
Morobe’s flying kumul spirits, alongside cultural identities of the 21 other provinces were on display, as the country came together.
With the 2015 Pacific Games just around the corner, Papua New Guinean athletes have set the benchmark for a new level of patriotism. It was a privilege and honour for Morobe Governor, Kelly Naru and his people of Morobe Province to host and present one of the greatest games ever to go down in Papua New Guinea’s sporting history.
As the closing ceremony marked an end to the 14 days of competition, it also opened up a new era for provincial governments to identify and emphasise on the good of sport.
Western Province’s lone athlete George Yamak, who won gold in the 1500m heat, inflicted a sense of pride and emotion not just to his people of Western Province, but to the whole of Papua New Guinea.
His act of perseverance, endurance and determination relayed one of the fundamental messages behind the 6th PNG Games. While this marks the end of one chapter, a new chapter will be unleashed next year as the 2015 Pacific Games is set to further exceed the standards set this year.
