MUGIL BRIDGE KEEPS STUDENTS, FAMILIES AND COMMUNITIES CONNECTED
Mugil Bridge in Madang Province is proving to be a critical lifeline, helping students, farmers and local communities stay connected to schools, health services, markets and economic opportunities along the Northern Coastal Highway.
The new bridge connects communities across Madang, Sumkar, Bogia and Middle Ramu districts.
For students at Mugil Primary School, the bridge is the only access to get to class safely.
Head Teacher Alphonse Bass said when the bridge was closed, school attendance dropped.
“The only access for students to school is the Mugil bridge. When it was closed school attendance dropped. When the bridge was fully completed, school attendance returned to normal,” Mr Bass said.
Department of Works and Highways Secretary Gibson Holemba said the bridge is more than just infrastructure.
“Mugil Bridge is more than an infrastructure asset. It is a vital connection linking communities across Madang Province to essential services and opportunities,” Mr Holemba said.
The bridge is a vital link for more than 400,000 people across Madang Province.
Australia delivered the bridge in partnership with the Department of Works and Highways to replace a flood-damaged crossing, providing a safer and more resilient connection along the Northern Coastal Highway.
Since 2024, Australia has invested PGK23.5 million to maintain the highway.
Australian High Commission Minister-Counsellor Dr Cate Rogers said reliable infrastructure creates opportunities.
“Through the PNG-Australia Partnership, Australia is proud to support infrastructure that helps children get to school safely and consistently.
“By improving access to education, investments like Mugil Bridge are helping young Papua New Guineans stay connected to learning and the opportunities it creates for their future,” Dr Rogers said.
The completed bridge is part of a larger package of ongoing works on the Northern Coastal Highway, with 12 new contracts underway for seawall construction, maintenance, drainage and resealing works.
