BRITISH COMMISSIONER THREAD TIES IN PNG AND UK COLOURS AHEAD OF WORLD CUP CLASH

British High Commissioner to Papua New Guinea, Paul Eastwood, has unveiled a custom-made half-England and Kumuls jersey as the two countries celebrate 51 years of friendship.

The Kumuls will take on England at WIN Stadium in Wollongong, Australia this evening and Eastwood is going all out for both teams with possibilities on shifting sides depending on the showdown.

“As my jersey shows, I will be supporting both sides, although I cannot promise it will be exactly 50:50,” Eastwood said.

“On the field, England and PNG will be rivals for 80 minutes. Off the field, our countries are celebrating 51 years of partnership and working together on shared priorities including security, climate change and investment. Our relationship remains strong, and I wish both teams the very best.

“Unfortunately, it was not possible to fit every team onto one jersey, including Scotland, Wales and the women’s teams. But I’m proud to support all UK and PNG teams competing throughout the tournament.”

The match comes ahead of a broader sports diplomacy programme led by the British High Commission, with a focus on increasing opportunities for women and girls in sport. By expanding participation, sport can help advance gender equality and support Papua New Guinean athletes to reach their full potential both on and off the field.

Both the teams recorded a win a lose each as they search a positive finish in the group matches.
