OVER 250 PNG AND AUSTRALIAN SOLDIERS JOIN EXERCISE WANTOK WARRIOR 2026

More than 250 soldiers from Papua New Guinea and Australia have come together in Port Moresby for Exercise Wantok Warrior 2026, strengthening the defence partnership between the two nations.

The annual exercise brought together the Papua New Guinea Defence Force (PNGDF) and Australian Defence Force (ADF) for stability and security training in Port Moresby and surrounding areas.

Soldiers trained in vehicle checkpoints, convoy escorts, patrols, engaging local leaders and communities, protecting key locations and security operations. Training also included operations aboard PNGDF’s HMPNGS Cape Gloucester heavy landing craft to enhance land and sea interoperability.

ADF 1RAR Commanding Officer Lieutenant Colonel Benedict Farrell said the exercise continues to build on the strong relationship between 1RAR and 1RPIR.

“Our soldiers have integrated with the PNGDF at every level, building interoperability and exchanging skills. Training in Papua New Guinea gives them exposure to real-world security scenarios and direct engagement with local communities,” he said.

PNGDF Commanding Officer Lieutenant Colonel Eddie Jarope said Wantok Warrior has evolved into a true partnership.

“Over the years, Wantok Warrior has grown from a one-way training opportunity into a joint exercise where both militaries share knowledge, skills and experience. Our interoperability improves every year,” he said.

The exercise highlights the benefits of the PNG-Australia defence alliance and ensures both nations remain ready to respond together to shared security challenges in the region.
