COUNCILLORS AND WARD RECORDERS INDUCTION CLOSES ON HIGH NOTE

By Ancilla Ilave

More than 70 Councillors and Recorders from the 65 wards across Huon Gulf District completed a three-day induction last Friday.

The Induction Program, conducted from 22 June to 24 June 2026 at the Sir Ignatius Kilage Indoor Stadium in Lae, brought together Councilors and Ward Recorders with women representatives from the District’s three Local Level Governments, Salamaua, Wampar, and Morobe Patrol Post.

District Administrator Andrew Namuesh said the induction was designed to strengthen participants’ understanding of governance, administration, planning, budgeting, reporting, leadership responsibilities, and effective service delivery at the ward and LLG levels.

The program was fully funded by the Huon Gulf District Development Authority to ensure participants were properly accommodated and supported throughout the training.

During the official closing ceremony, Jason Peter, MP, and the Huon Gulf District Administration further demonstrated their appreciation by presenting a total of K30,000 to participants.

DA Namuesh said the funding was distributed equally among the three LLGs for Councilors and Ward Recorders to share and assist with their immediate needs upon returning to their respective communities.

Minister Peter acknowledged that many participants had traveled from some of the most remote and hard-to-reach areas of Huon Gulf District and had spent several days away from their families and communities to attend the induction.

He said allowing participants to return home empty-handed after dedicating their time to strengthening their leadership and administrative skills would not appropriately recognize their commitment and contribution to the district.

“The support provided was a token of appreciation for their service and dedication to their wards and communities,” Peter said.

The inclusion of Women Councilor Representatives also demonstrated the District’s commitment to promoting inclusive governance and ensuring that women continue to play an active role in community leadership and development.

The District Administration commended all Councilors, Ward Recorders, and Women Representatives for their participation, discipline, and commitment to strengthening governance and development across the district.
