By Jacinta Dokta and Lorraine Jimal
Earlier this morning the newly elected Governor for New Ireland Byron Chan was officially welcomed by The People’s Progress Party Leader Douglas Tomuriesa along with Party members and clan leaders at the Jacksons Domestic Terminal in Port Moresby.
Upon his arrival, the newly elected Governor affirmed the people of New Ireland that the seat belongs to them and he would serve in their best interests.
Governor Chan also pledged to work alongside the province’s leaders for the betterment of the people and the province.
Meanwhile, Peoples Progress Party leader Douglas Tomuriesa thanked the people of Papua New Guinea for their support in the Party and Chan’s family.
Tomuriesa said Chan is not new in the politics and his win was shown through the ballot papers by the New Ireland people.
“We will have a meeting and discuss a way forward, governor is elected by the people and when you are on that seat, you must represent your people as governor,” Tomuriesa said.
Governor Chan said the people had faith in his and they elected him.
“I am sure the party has policies and it is not easy but we will work together to implement,” he said.
The welcome ceremony was small but meaningful for the New Ireland people as they now have a leader that will represent them and continue the legacy of late Sir Julius Chan.
