WAPENAMANDA AIRPORT TEMPORARY CLOSED

The National Airports Corporation (NAC) has announced the immediate temporary closure of Wapenamanda Airport in Enga Province following escalating civil unrest in the area. The decision took effect on Thursday, August 21, 2025.

Acting Managing Director of NAC, Dominic Kaumu, said the closure was necessary after reports of armed violence and the use of offensive weapons near the airport. He stressed that the measure was a precautionary step to protect passengers, staff, and aircraft operations.

“In light of these developments, NAC has taken proactive steps to safeguard the public by temporarily closing Wapenamanda Airport until such time as the situation stabilizes and normalcy is restored,” Kaumu stated.

A Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) was issued today confirming the suspension of all flight operations. Kaumu said the situation was being closely monitored and that services would only resume once safety could be assured.

He expressed regret over the inconvenience caused by the indefinite closure but assured travellers and stakeholders that NAC is working with authorities to restore security. The corporation pledged to provide timely updates and to reopen the airport as soon as conditions return to normal.
