As the 2024 academic year is approaching, parents are looking for sources of income to support their children financially to go back to school.
Thousands of copra producers in the Dagua, Wewak Islands and Turubu Local Level Governments of Wewak District are anxious as to how they can sell their copra to pay for school fees.
For some, their main source of income is copra production because their cocoa blocks were attacked by cocoa pod borer. When Globe, the only copra buyer in Wewak came to a halt on its business operation last November due to a death in the management, the people suffered.
A local copra producer, buyer and a former Ward Member in Dagua, Petrus Ailabain said seeing the struggle his people were in, he decided to sort out some finance and buy copra.
He said he managed to buy 5 tonnes, even though the market he would resell is not clear and the freight cost of K30 per item, would cost him more and he would not make enough profit, he just wants to help in a little way he could.
The former ward member said, apart from the issue of no market availability to sell their excessive production, road access from Sowom Kauk area to Wewak is also deteriorating and freight charge for economic produce is high. This is a challenge for the people there to transport their produce to the market.
Meanwhile, a source from Globe Manufacturing says Globe Copra buying depot in Wewak is now set to resume its business operation and start buying copra on the 5th of February, 2024.
