More Concerns Raise about Sepik Highway Condition

By Stanley Ove Junior

East Sepik Governor Allan Bird has queried road maintenance work on sections of the Sepik Highway.

Speaking during the Parliament Sitting yesterday, Governor Bird questioned Works Minister Michaek Nali on why work has not been carried out to upgrade roads in the province.

In 2018, a commitment was made to seal the road Angoram to Wewak however, no work has been carried out since.

Governor Bird says the poor state of the road has caused a number of road accidents and a rise in criminal activities in the area.

He also raised concern on the collapsing Hawain bridge.

A K20 Million was allocated to fix the bridge but no work has been done since despite several inspections carried out by the Works Minister including Prime Minister James Marape.

In response, Works Minister Michael Nali says the Angoram to Wewak is included in the ConnectPNG Program and will be prioritized.

In regard to Hawain bridge, Minister Nali said the 19 Million funding is locked up in trust account in the Central Bank.

Nali said he has instructed Work Secretary David Wereh to locate the money within the Central Bank and to commence work on the bridge.
