Mambuan Community Launches Fishing Project

A community in Bogia District launched a fishing project recently as an avenue to generate income.

The project aims to target fishermen along the Bogia coastline including Raicoast and East Sepik province to buy and sell fish at a smaller scale but with plans to expand the market.

Ten villages that make up the Mambuan community in Bogia District have set up a fishing corporative as a means to support themselves.

The National Development Bank supported the local fishermen through its fishing credit scheme.

Bogia District Development Authority also supported the concept with a K100 000 funding to kick start the project.

Local MP, Robert Naguri, says Bogia has been depending on national government funding for many years and it is time the District finds other means to support its projects.

Naguri says Bogia will also register its own company as a business arm for the District.

Local fishing groups can register through the company and will work with the fisheries sector.

Naguri further states the fishing project is also in line with the government’s plans to empower local fishermen by giving them an opportunity to also sell and export their catch overseas.
