Consultation Urged after Bougainville Referendum

Following the announcement of the referendum results, the National Government, and Autonomous Bougainville Governments have been urged to begin consulting immediately on the outcome to be brought to the National Parliament for ratification.

Speaking to National EMTV News, Bougainville Referendum Commission Chairman, Bertie Ahern, said it was important that both governments continue to consult in the weeks ahead.
BRC Chairman Bertie Ahern arrived in Port Moresby today, ahead of the return of Bougianville Referendum Writ to the Governor General tomorrow.

A little over 24 hours since the announcement of the referendum result – which saw an overwhelming 98percent of voters opting for independence, the BRC Chairman called on the Autonomous Bougainville Government, and National Government to begin consultations immediately on the results.
This he said was important in keeping the spirit of the Bougainville Peace Agreement.

Chairman Ahern also thanking international development partners for contributing to a successful referendum outcome.

For BRC Commissioner, Ruby Mirinka, the conclusion, and announcement of the results in the referendum are a reflection of the aspirations of the people of Bougainville – something which must be respected by both governments when negotiating on an outcome to be brought before the National Parliament.
