Ramu Nico Spillage Report Alarming

Environmental expert responsible for assessing the Ramu Nico Mine spillage in Madang Province has described the first report as alarming and shocking. Dr Alex Mojon told the media, the results from the samples tested proved high contamination levels with heavy metals found in all samples.

“I have to tell you that its alarming, that’s why I am here…there is evidence that Ramu Nico is not managing their waste, and that is a fact. I have obtained the results from the laboratory from Germany, and I must tell you, I am shocked.” Dr Mojon stated.

While there is more assessments to be done, Madang Governor, Peter Yama, is preparing to sue the Chinese company for environmental damage and non-payment of benefits.

“We will call for closure and fight for our people’s rights…” The Governor stated, adding that no economic gain should be at the cost of his people’s lives.

Out of the 28 samples sent for laboratory test in Germany, all prove toxic. He says about 200,000 litres are spilled every year. Calculate that and 800,000 litres of waste from the mine is spilled to the environment in the Basamuk area. Dr Mojon says the situation is dangerous.

The shocking result is alarming according to Madang Governor, Peter Yama who stated that the team of experts will be supported to complete the assessment and appropriate action will be taken against the Chinese company.

Meanwhile Ramu Nico is yet to present their environmental report to the Madang Provincial   Government.
