Deportation Letter Served to Chinese Nationals Involved in Assault of Journalist

By Lucy Kopana – EMTV News, Port Moresby

A deportation notice was served yesterday afternoon by immigration officers in Lae to a Chinese male involved in assaulting a national in December last year.

The letter signed by Chief Immigration Officer, Soloman Kantha, ordered the removal of Min Zheng and his partner, Shu Ding Wu within seven days of the notice being served, and the cancellation of their entry permits.

Failure to leave the country within seven days will result in the couple being forcefully deported after the seventh day of receiving the notice.

Min Zheng and his partner Shu Ding Wu were charged for assaulting and verbally abusing EMTV’s Lae based journalist, Julie Badui Owa, after she asked them to put out their cigarettes whilst they were smoking in their shop. Owa was accompanied by her mother and three children when this happened on the 24th of December, last year.

A formal complaint was laid with Lae police and the couple was charged.  They appeared in the Lae District court and were fined K500 each, and were ordered by the court to pay K1000 as compensation to the complainant.

Wu is reported to be out of the country at the moment, however, Zheng signed his proof of service after being given the letter in the presence of his lawyer yesterday afternoon.
