Maru: PNG needs better process to prepare seasonal workers

By Jack Lapauve Jr – EMTV News, Port Moresby

Papua New Guinea needs to improve its processes to engage more seasonal workers in New Zealand.

Officials from East Pack Limited, a leading Kiwi Fruit exporting giant says processes in preparing labor recruitment is very slow.

National Planning Minister Richard Maru says Government agencies will be forced to ramp up the process so many youths can be engaged under the scheme.

Nearly 35 Papua New Guinean’s are working there, under New Zealand’s Recognized Seasonal Workers Employment Scheme (RSE). However for PNG, the numbers are constantly  low, with 35 being the maximum. The PNG Government now needs to improve and establish a robust system to prepare seasonal workers.

East Pack officials say if processes are effective, more Papua New Guinean’s can be recruited to work in New Zealand. It contributes 30 % of its produce to the Kiwi Fruit Industry in New Zealand.

East Pack is one organization under the RSE Scheme which aims to encourage economic development in the Pacific by recruiting seasonal workers every year.
