A family residing at the 2-mile area in Lae have raised health concerns over waste from a sausage factory owned by a Chinese company near their residence.
Mother of three, Debora Ruembori, says the company has been disposing waste from the sausage factory into a nearby creek in front of their residential area for almost four years. The formal complain was reported to Lae City Council Health Department at the beginning of last year, but nothing has been done.
The waste from the factory is washed into the drainage system, then passes through an outlet into a huge bucket. It overflows and escapes through a pipe into the creek, which is next to the Ruembori family residence.
Residing there for more than 30 years, the family told EMTV News Lae that their living conditions have changed since the disposal of waste from the factory three years ago. Although the family has reported the matter to Lae City Council Health Department early last year, nothing has been done.
Mr Ruembori said he got terminated from work last year due to absenteeism, as he was following up on the issue of concern with the respected authorities.
The company’s General Manager, Hui Chen, said they will seek assistance from Lae City Council Health Department when the company owner, Salu Chung, returns from an overseas trip at the end of this month.
