NCD Dog Unit Suspension Uplifted

By Theckla Gunga – EMTV News, Port Moresby

Over 60 members of the NCD Dog Unit resumed policing duties in the NCD Command today after four weeks of suspension. The suspension was uplifted on Monday this week, following numerous discussions between the NCD Metropolitan Command and the Dog Unit Directorate.

The Unit was grounded in March by head of NCD Command, because of an increase in allegations of misconduct and ill-behaviors by members of the unit, whilst on police duties. This involved allegations of stealing, assaults and firing of tear gas into a primary school between January and March this year.

The suspension was a unanimous decision and supported by the police hierarchy. However, it did not affect the involvement of NCD Dog Unit members who are taking part in the APEC Security Operation or the normal training of police dogs at Bomana.

Dog Unit is a Specialized Directorate in the Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary. It conducts bomb and drug searches, crowd control and takes part in major police operations. But the suspension was described as a bold move to restore command and control.
