Porgera Power Plant Offline

By Meriba Tulo, EMTV News -Port Moresby

Barrick Niugini Limited has confirmed damage to its power generation plant, located in Hela province.

Barrick, which operates the Porgera Mine in Enga Province, confirmed the damage to its Hides power generation facility this afternoon.

The epicentre of the 7.5 magnitude earthquake was located approximately south-west of Porgera Mine, much closer to its Hides power generation plant.

According to BNL Executive Managing Director, Mr Richmond Fenn, Porgera Mine is now operating on back-up power and some production activities have been suspended to conserve power.

He added that the mine had sent a team to the Hides facility to assess the damage.

Following the assessment, they will have a much clearer picture of what repairs may be required, and how long the Hides facility may be offline.
