The dire need for more health services in areas outside of main towns and cities has forced pregnant mothers to leave their homes early, before their actual delivery date.
Lillian Henepia told EMTV News, the critical need for health services is important to address the high maternal health problem in PNG.
” The Nation’s future lies in the health of mothers and children. This is something everyone must take responsibility of..,” Henepia explained.
Lillian, a first time mother, who is expecting a baby boy, had to travel about 30 minutes from Laloki to access health services at Port Moresby General Hospital.
Although she is a nurse at the Laloki Psychiatric Hospital there are no maternity services near where she lives.
This causes her to travel into the city for antenatal care and also to give birth.
Lillian’s story centres on the fail distribution of services and the need to provide adequate services. This is to reduce high maternity deaths in the country.
